Arthur Tress (American, b. 1940)
Born in Brooklyn, New York, Arthur Tress developed an interest in photography at a young age. While traveling in Africa and Asia, Tress became interested in ethnographical photography. He then began to use photography to raise environmental awareness, which evolved into a more personal mode of “magic realism.” His personal portraiture and homoerotic work from the ’70’s and ’80’s stands out among his most memorable images. His work can be found in the public collection of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, the Brooklyn Art Museum, the Centre Georges Pompidou, the Victoria & Albert Museum, and the Whitney Museum of American Art, among others. The artist currently lives and works in Cambria, California. “Enema Fantasy” is in the permanent collection of The Getty Museum, Los Angeles.
